A significant amount of our best farm and ranch land is near expanding cities. America’s cities sprang up where the land was the richest, and today, the majority of our fruits, vegetables and dairy products are grown on land that lies directly in the path of development. Every year we lose an area the size of Delaware to asphalt and buildings. Once this productive land is gone, it can’t be brought back, and the ripple effect is tremendous.
American Farmland Trust’s Farmland Protection initiative is working on the federal and state level to put strong policies and programs in place that protect the future of our nation’s precious working lands.
